We are Kenya's home for machine learning research, education, and community — working to ensure that Africa shapes the future of artificial intelligence.
To democratise access to world-class AI education and research opportunities for Kenyan and East African communities — bridging the gap between global advances in machine learning and local talent, ensuring that Kenya contributes to and benefits from the AI revolution.
A vibrant, self-sustaining AI ecosystem in Kenya where local researchers lead globally impactful work, where every aspiring ML practitioner has a pathway to excellence, and where Kenya's rich diversity of perspectives strengthens the quality and ethics of AI systems worldwide.
IndabaX Kenya runs programmes across four pillars that together advance the AI ecosystem in Kenya.
We support machine learning research through paper submission tracks, blind peer review, and showcasing original work from Kenyan researchers at our annual symposium.
From beginner workshops to advanced deep learning tutorials, we design learning experiences that meet participants where they are and help them grow.
Our events create a vibrant space for researchers, students, industry practitioners, and policymakers to connect and collaborate on AI initiatives across Kenya.
We nurture an inclusive, pan-African AI community by partnering with universities, NGOs, and industry partners to ensure AI development reflects African realities.
From a small gathering in 2019 to a thriving community of 500+ — here is how IndabaX Kenya has grown.
IndabaX Kenya was established as the Kenya chapter of Deep Learning Indaba, with the inaugural event held in Nairobi bringing together 80+ participants.
In response to the pandemic, IndabaX Kenya pivoted to online events, reaching a wider audience across East Africa and demonstrating community resilience.
We introduced a formal paper submission and blind review process, enabling Kenyan researchers to present original ML work to the community.
Combining in-person and online participation, our 2022 symposium attracted 200+ attendees and featured speakers from four African countries.
Formal partnerships with five Kenyan universities were signed, expanding our outreach and enabling dedicated student tracks at every event.
Launched a dedicated Women in AI scholarship programme, providing travel grants and mentorship to underrepresented researchers attending IndabaX Kenya.
The IndabaX Kenya community surpassed 500 active members, with chapters of the alumni network forming in Mombasa, Kisumu, and Eldoret.
This year we launch our new digital platform, expand the research review programme, and host our largest event yet with international keynote speakers.
IndabaX Kenya is run by a passionate group of volunteers dedicated to growing Kenya's AI community.
